Why Christmas Baking is the Best Kind of Baking

Christmas baking has the power to bring families together, spark creativity, and create lasting memories. From spiced gingerbread men to buttery mince pies, baking at Christmas adds an extra sprinkle of joy to the season. So why not gather your loved ones and get baking?

Classic Christmas Recipes to Try

1. Gingerbread Men That Everyone Will Love

Nothing says Christmas like a tray of warm, spiced gingerbread cookies. Perfect with a cuppa or as a snack while wrapping gifts, they’re a holiday classic.

Ingredients:

  • 350g plain flour
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 125g butter (cold, diced)
  • 175g light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C for fan ovens). Line a baking tray with parchment.
  2. Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  3. Rub in the butter until the mix resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar.
  4. Beat the egg and golden syrup together, then combine with the dry mixture, forming a dough.
  5. Roll out the dough (about 1cm thick), cut out gingerbread shapes, and place on the tray.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until lightly golden. Leave to cool before decorating with icing and sprinkles for that festive touch.

2. Christmas Mince Pies with a Twist

Mince pies are a festive must, but have you tried adding a crumbly topping? It’s a game-changer!

Ingredients for Pastry:

  • 225g plain flour
  • 125g cold butter (cubed)
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Ingredients for Filling and Topping:

  • A jar of good-quality mincemeat
  • 50g plain flour
  • 30g butter
  • 30g demerara sugar

Method:

  1. Make the pastry by rubbing the flour and butter together until it becomes breadcrumb-like. Mix in sugar and the beaten egg to form a dough. Chill for 30 minutes.
  2. Roll out the pastry and cut into circles to fit your baking tin. Press gently and fill each with a spoonful of mincemeat.
  3. Create the crumble topping by rubbing the butter into the flour. Mix in sugar, then sprinkle it over the mince pies.
  4. Bake at 200°C (180°C for fan ovens) for 20 minutes. Serve with a dusting of icing sugar.

3. Festive Chocolate Yule Log

If you’re looking for something decadent that’ll truly impress your guests, a Yule Log is the star of any dessert table.

Ingredients for Sponge:

  • 25g cocoa powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 100g caster sugar

Ingredients for Buttercream:

  • 100g softened butter

  • 25g cocoa powder

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C for fan ovens). Grease and line a Swiss roll tin.
  2. Whisk eggs and sugar together until fluffy. Sift in flour and cocoa, folding gently.
  3. Pour into the tin, spreading evenly, and bake for 10 minutes.
  4. Turn the sponge onto parchment, carefully roll into a log shape, and leave to cool.
  5. Mix buttercream ingredients until smooth. Unroll the sponge, spread some buttercream inside, and roll it back up. Cover the log with frosting, then use a fork to create the classic bark effect.

Tips for Stress-Free Festive Baking

  • Plan Ahead: Start with a list of ingredients you need, and get them early to avoid Christmastime rush shopping.
  • Baking with Kids? Keep it simple. Gingerbread cookies or sugar cookies are always a hit for decorating.
  • Store Smart: Many baked goods freeze well, so make them ahead and defrost when needed. Mince pies, for example, are excellent for this.

Make Baking a New Tradition

There you have it—three festive favourites to sweeten your Christmas season. Whether you’re sharing these treats with loved ones or enjoying them solo with your favourite holiday movies, baking is the perfect way to bring comfort and joy into your home.
